Louisianans who have suffered under “Bidenomics” can finally see a light. Last month, our own House Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise secured passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which would protect the Trump tax cuts and make them permanent.
This is good news for Louisianans. The Trump tax cuts expire at the end of 2025. Failing to renew them would amount to the largest tax hike in history at a time when we’re still struggling with rising prices. In fact, without the OBBBA, the average Louisiana family will pay more than $2,000 more in federal taxes in 2026.
Now it’s the Senate’s turn. A few senators have signaled a desire for deeper spending cuts, which could improve this already solid bill. For example, they can accelerate zeroing out Green New Deal subsidies. Reducing cronyism will save taxpayer funds and take the government’s finger off the scale of domestic energy production.
But it’s important to remember that budget reconciliation isn’t the only opportunity to cut spending. Our nation has a well-documented spending problem and we need to get it under control. But it didn’t start overnight and it won’t be solved in a single bill.
The good news is that the Trump administration has identified wasteful spending and included it in a rescission package that only requires a bare majority from the House and the Senate to pass. Scalise is carrying this bill in the House next week. Hopefully, this is the first of many rescission packages.
Budget reforms and making the Trump tax cuts permanent are needed to help more Louisianans achieve their American dreams.
Americans for Prosperity has spent months asking Americans how tax increases would harm their budgets, businesses and employees. We’re sharing what they told us in a new series of ads launched last week.
One said tax hikes would make the future of her small business less certain. A real estate agent told us tax hikes would make it harder for people to buy their first home. Senior citizens told us it will be harder to retire.
Owning a business, buying a home, and retiring with savings — these milestones are part of the American Dream. But with “Bidenflation,” all have been much harder to realize.
Our ads come as OBBBA opponents are laser-focused on sinking this important piece of legislation. Senators should know that AFP — and millions of activists — have their back on making the Trump tax cuts permanent.
We stand ready to correct the record — to make sure voters know the truth.
And here is the truth: the sooner the Senate advances the OBBBA, the sooner Congress can turn to budget reform and find more ways to save taxpayer money.
It’s time to get this done. It’s time to approve the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

Guest Column: Congress should take a page from Louisiana’s energy policy
Louisiana stands at the center of America’s most critical energy challenge: meeting exploding electricity demand from artificial intelligence and data centers while maintaining affordable, reliable power for families and businesses. The Trump administration’s early actions signal recognition of this reality, and we are already seeing strong follow-up from Congress – but we will need more …
